The State Theatre Company produce good stuff.
Over The Rainbow gives it to us, in beautiful abundance, and they FOUND the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (blatant pun intended, honestly I’m funnier than this) with this one.
End of the Rainbow is a musical drama by Peter Quilter and stars Musical Theatre Mega-Star Helen Dallimore (Wicked, Legally Blonde The Musical) breathing life into Judy Garland while showcasing 10 of her most beloved songs. It’s sad, funny, sobering, engaging and nothing short of stage brilliance.
We nod the 50 years anniversary of Judy’s death in 2019, so this production is both timely but also required for celebration of her immense talent.
But this was no skip through poppy fields, this was a warts and all story of a lady who found pain in the Emerald City which followed her the years of her life. The booze, the drugs, the mental abuse it all was played out before us. The audience was mesmerized and agasp the entire 2 hours and 15 minutes. I can only imagine the conversations of the punters in their cars/ubers/trams on the way home.
This show touched every essence of my being, and you didn’t need to be a ‘Friend of Dorothy’ (look it up) to appreciate this spectacular. Thrilling, daring and raw. The story went: Judy Garland, her fifth husband and manager, Mickey Deans, and her long-time accompanist, Anthony, check into the Ritz Hotel in London. In a final attempt to revive her career, Judy agrees to a five-week residency at the Talk of the Town nightclub. But as opening night nears, can she overcome her demons to dazzle audiences once more?
The band was exceptional led by Carol Young AND Stephen Sheehan as Judy’s accompanist Anthony Chapman and
Nic English as husband and manager were worthy of their own tremendous applause.
Running in conjunction with/as part of the 2019 Adelaide Cabaret Festival the stage with ease transformed from Hotel Apartment to Performance Stage at the blink of lights.
Clang, Clang, Clang went the Trollies! – this was one hell of show.
3 words: Breathtaking, Mesmerizing & Outstanding. Five Stars.
