If you’ve seen a Justass League production before, you know what you’re in for… a whole lot of Ass, with a side of talent, glamour & sexual sass. The new show – ASSemble! doesn’t disappoint.
ASSemble! is billed as a ‘nerdlesque’ tribute show to Marvel Comics, presented by The JustAss League who previously presented the highly reviewed shows “Dawn of Just Ass” and “Club Gotham: Villains of Vaudeville”. It played for one night only to a packed house at Nexus Arts last weekend, the punters came , saw (a lot of skin) and left (very satisfied).
The very accomplished and confident Stanley Browning compered the evening and had the crowd amused and laughing along with his cheeky banter and witty one liners. He set the tone of the night by immediately ripping of his shirt with much audience appreciation. His ability to connect the acts together seamlessly and keep the momentum is an enviable talent itself. Good solid mc’ing.
The role call from there flowed generously with act after act revealing not only there bodies but their characters and their sensual souls.
Some personal standouts:
The opening act was Maple Mae as Captain America. She was slick, on point and gave the crowd exactly what they came for. She encaptured the 50’s era perfectly.
Sirena Von Strumpet as Squirrel Girl had the audience totally onside with her acrobatic skills as she spun, hung upside down and contorted around a hoop with ease.
The only male performer, Stroker Ace as Adam Warlock, gave the girls (and gays) a bit of something extra and did a sensational job with a stunning costume that was slightly Flash Gordon reminiscent complete with bleach blonde hair.
The outstanding and talented producer of the show, Diana Divine, gave us 2 performances as Jessica Jones and J Jonah Jameson which only showed how she has refined her art form to immaculate levels.
The audience involvement during certain parts of the show was both fun and well added (this can go boringly wrong sometimes). Great job.
All acts were very brilliant burlesque with fabulous well put together costumes, hair and makeup done to perfection and routines that clearly have been rehearsed with discipline. A few of the acts could perhaps make a bit more eye contact with the audience making that connection somewhat stronger and a couple of acts need to hide their nerves a little more and own their moment. One thing that was missing that the previous show had was some live singing which turned it up a level, would have been great to included some of that again. But that’s nit-picking. It was a tight show that was thoroughly entertaining and had the audience glad they were there, myself included. And despite a couple of acts out due to injuries with others brought in at the last minute – it appeared flawless.
